How the Disney Dining Plan Works

Disney Dining Plan

With the Disney Dining Plan, you are pre-paying for a certain number of meals ahead of time on a “voucher / credit system.” For every night of your stay, each person receives a certain amount of quick service meals (think fast food), table service meals (sit-down w/ wait staff), and snacks. The number of which is dependent on which dining plan you choose, but you can order any meal, no matter the cost, per meal credit – so you’ll want to use your credits wisely. Your credit balance is stored on your MagicBand, with a receipt provided after redeeming credits indicating how many credits remain.

For some families, the Disney Dining Plan is a great way to save money at Disney World. For others, it doesn’t. I’ve found a handy Disney dining calculator to help you determine if it will be a good deal for you to purchase or not. Some of the pros and cons are:

  • Pros – Pre-payment allows for easier budgeting, flexibility of dining credit usage, can apply credits to special shows or character meals, and the option of eating at nicer restaurants.
  • Cons – Strict requirements to follow and track, no appetizers on the standard plan, at age 10 kids are “adults” on the plan, and you lose money of you don’t use all of your dining credits.
